According to Celtic lore, the Ash was one of the most sacred trees along with the Oak & Hawthorn. It was cherished for its strength and healing power and among Celtic tribes it was considered a tree of luck from which spear and arrow shafts were made. It is said that even Cupid's arrows were made from Ash. The Ash was regarded as a "Chieftain" tree and three of the five "Guardian Trees" that sheltered each of the five provinces were Ash. The five were known as Eó Mugna (Oak tree), Bile Tortan (Ash tree), Eó Ruis (Yew tree), Craeb Daithí (Ash tree) and Craeb Uisnig (Ash tree). Rhyme Studio's design collection The OM Series derives from a 1600 year old “tree” alphabet Ogham, used mainly to write the early Irish language.
THE OM SERIES
Featuring the naturally rich and un-dyed brown wool of the Irish sheep Zwartbles, The OM Series derives from a 1600 year old alphabet Ogham, used mainly to write the early Irish language. Known for monumental inscriptions on standing stones, its history dates back to at least the third or fourth century A.D, placing it in use long before the arrival of Latin to Ireland. Also called the tree alphabet, some believe it was created by druids and scholars as a secret form of communication. These mysterious letters of Ogham were paired with ancient Irish tree and plant species, many of which were considered sacred but have all but disappeared from Ireland’s landscape today.
“The early Celts venerated certain trees across Europe and we share their fascination with the ancient Irish sigils of Ogham. We like to imagine this tree alphabet brings one closer to the natural world while also creating a rug or tapestry design that can spell just about any word”
Each small tapestry in this series is a meditative artwork rooted in ancient meaning and a contemporary interpretation of ancient Irish language, wool, and land. The structure of the linework echoes Ogham marks; the palette expresses the essence of the tree and the Irish landscape
