About the Design

Eye Amulet is a 3ft hand-tufted tapestry created from genuine Irish Zwartbles wool blended with silk. This piece is part of Rhyme Studio’s Black Sheep Collection - a contemporary exploration of Irish heritage fibers, wellness-focused materials, and symbolic design.

The tapestry is made from the rich, deep brown undyed fleece of the Irish Zwartbles sheep. This distinctive fiber needs no chemical dyeing, making it one of the most sustainable materials available for interior textiles. Naturally resilient, odor-resistant, and dirt-masking, Zwartbles wool brings an organic, grounding quality ideal for wellness-driven interiors.

Collection Story: Black Sheep

“Baa Baa Black Sheep, have you any wool…” Nursery Rhyme, 1774

The Black Sheep collection champions a fiber that was traditionally, and still is, considered “worthless” simply because it cannot be commercially dyed. Designer Claire McGovern responds:

“Black Sheep celebrates an organic fiber that has been marginalized for decades. The phrase ‘black sheep’ originally described animals whose darker wool was undesirable because it couldn't be dyed. Today, that very quality makes Zwartbles wool more sustainably desirable as it must be used in its natural form.”

The Irish Zwartbles sheep, whose name translates to “black with a white blaze,” produces a beautifully soft, naturally dark wool with a strong crimp ideal for carpet and textile creation. Historically spun in Irish mills and now hand-knotted or tufted for Rhyme Studio, this wool offers a rare combination of cultural authenticity, sustainability, durability, and aesthetic distinction.

Material & Craft

  • Genuine Irish Zwartbles wool blended with silk

  • Undyed, naturally deep brown fibre

  • Hand-tufted in small-batch artisan production

  • Durability suited to high-touch interior environments

  • Responsibly sourced directly from Irish farms

  • Crafted for long life, natural performance, and wellness-driven design

Design Notes

“Eye Amulet” invokes the protective symbolism found across ancient cultures while grounding the piece in the wild and elemental undyed beauty of Irish wool. Each tapestry is produced in small runs, making it both a contemporary design object and a piece of living Irish material heritage.

Framing: A limited number of handcrafted frames are available by request for an additional charge. Please contact us directly before purchase if you would like a framed piece.
